During the July 27th meeting of SEPTA’s board, SEPTA’s General Manager Leslie Richards gave an update on the status of a new plan for SEPTA-owned property along Conshohocken’s riverfront. The property has been slated to be a parking garage to serve the Conshohocken Train Station and provide spaces for a PennDOT program to encourage drivers off the Schuylkill Expressway and utilize the Manayunk/Norristown Regional Rail line.
The plan for the parking garage had advanced to the point where the board was to vote on awarding contracts to start its construction, however, in recent meetings the board has tabled that action. The awarding of contracts was tabled once again during the July 27th meeting.
Richards shared that talks have continued with the Borough of Conshohocken and the sources of funding such as PennDOT. It had been stated in a recent committee meeting that SEPTA and the Borough of Conshohocken were working on a memorandum of understanding regarding the property.
The Borough of Conshohocken, via Borough Council President Colleen Leonard, strongly stated that it wanted SEPTA to move forward with the garage as planned and that the borough would not approve any housing. Conshohocken’s Borough Council voted in 2022 to remove all residential uses from the zoning districts that comprise the riverfront. According to SEPTA, that position has softened.
SEPTA’s board voted during the July 27th meeting to not hold any public meetings during August, so we likely won’t learn more about this until after Labor Day.
