Obituary of Gerald Michael McTamney

Former Conshohocken Borough Council President Gerald “Gerry” McTamney passed away on February 9th. McTamney was a pivotal figure in the redevelopment of Conshohocken and continued to attend public meetings to voice his opinion on proposed developments. Gerald Michael McTamney, age 82 of Conshohocken passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at home with his daughters by his side. Gerald was the son of the late James & Marie (Hushen) McTamney. Born April 29, 1931 and raised in West Conshohocken, he made his home in Conshohocken with his childhood sweetheart, Mary (Burns) and wife of 61 yrs. He was a member of St. Matthew’s RC Church.

Gerald proudly served in the United States Marine Corps 1950-54 and participated in operations against enemy (Communist Forces) in Korea from April 1953 to July 1953 and in the defense of United Nations positions in Korea from July 1953 to June 1954. He raised to the rank of Sergeant and earned 7 medals.

Gerald was employed by the Pipefitters & Steamfitters Local Union 428 (now #420), as well as President and Business Agent of Local 428. He was most proud of his 32 yrs of service to Conshohocken as Councilman with 18 years of that time as Council President. He was instrumental in the Urban Renewal of downtown Conshohocken that took place throughout the 1970’s and 80’s. He also served as the borough’s Code Enforcement Officer after his retirement from council and continued his concern for his beloved hometown still attending local meetings up until his passing.

He will be dearly missed by his daughters, Marie (Jack) Chance of Blue Anchor, NJ and Maureen McTamney of Egg Harbor, NJ, sister Janet (Thomas) Smith of Conshohocken, grandchildren – John, Meghan, Lauren, Zachary and Nathan and great-grandchildren Jude and Abigail, nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Along with his wife and parents he was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Kotch-Bramowski, grandson Michael C. Kotch, sister Nancy McTamney, brother James McTamney.

Services and viewing will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at William A. Moore Funeral Home, 708 Fayette St, Conshohocken, PA 19428. Friends may call between 9:00-11:30am. Interment will follow with Full Military Honors at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
