The May 2nd agenda for Plymouth Township’s Council shows that on May 8th there will be a hearing involving a conditional use application for the conversion of an office building at 502 West Germantown Pike in Plymouth Meeting. This office building is located adjacent to the Plymouth Meeting Mall and is owned by Keystone Development + Investment.
In November 2022, Plymouth Township’s Council voted 5-0 to amend the zoning code to allow for the conversion of an office building within the Shopping Center District into apartments as a conditional use.
Based on a previous presentation by Keystone, the long-vacant office building could be converted to include approximately 150 apartments.
This is a different proposal for apartments than the one sought by PREIT, the owner of the Plymouth Meeting Mall. It previously sought to construct a 503-unit apartment community on the site of the long-vacant portion of the mall property that has an office building that was once home to IKEA’s headquarters in North America. PREIT’s plan would have it demolish the existing building and construct a new one, which wouldn’t meet the condition of the November 2022 zoning amendment. PREIT had sought a special exception to allow the apartment community from the township’s zoning hearing board, which denied the application. PREIT is currently appealing this decision in the court system.
The conditional use hearing is scheduled for May 8th at 6:00 p.m. at the Greater Plymouth Community Center.
