Event – Children, Sports & Concussions Symposium in West Conshy

The growing awareness of sports concussions sometimes overlooks our most vulnerable athletes – our children. On the evening of Monday, April 22nd, leading experts on the subject will address the concerns of parents, coaches and educators in a free symposium, Children, Sports & Concussions, sponsored by Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer at the Philadelphia Marriott West, in West Conshohocken. Pennsylvania State Senator Pat Browne, who co-sponsored the Safety in Youth Sports Act, will be on hand to give opening remarks.

Among the experts who will speak that night are former Major League Soccer all-star Taylor Twellman, former Philadelphia Flyers captain Keith Primeau (both of whom retired from sports early due to concussions), pediatric concussion specialist Dr. Matthew Grady from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, former professional lacrosse player Tony Resch, women’s basketball coach Cindy Griffin from Saint Joseph’s University, and experienced athletic trainers Ned Crane and Leanne Edwards, from NovaCare. Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Mike Barr will also discuss coaching education curriculum and over training issues.

The event, which is free of charge to the public, will be in the Ballroom of the Philadelphia Marriott West, beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer, which represents over 130,000 children competing in soccer in 36 Eastern Pennsylvania counties, is taking a leadership role in addressing the issue of concussions in sport, and invites participants from all sports to attend this important forum.
