Today’s news that Saint Matthew Parish and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia are considering selling the SS Cosmas & Damian church and property to the Coptic Church sent us on a mission to learn more about the new congregation potentially making its home in Conshohocken.
What we found is that the Coptic Church once had a church, Saint George Coptic Orthodox Church, in Conshohocken from 1980 through through the early 1990’s. It was located at West 3rd Avenue and Forrest Street. It is currently and office building and the photo above is how it looks today.
The congregation eventually desired more space and an effort to build a new church in the Plymouth Meeting section of Whitemarsh failed. Saint George’s eventually found a new home in a former Lutheran church in Norristown, which was consecrated in 1994.
There are about 300 families that are members of Saint George Coptic Orthodox Church according to its Wikipedia page. According to the a study conducted by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia when it was considering which parishes to keep open, merge or close, SS Cosmas and Damian Parish had 931 registered families.
